We are experts on knowing the importance of proper feed storage in warmer weather – after all, we do have our own line of feeds!
The Importance of Proper Feed Storage in Warmer Weather
Warmer weather is finally here. While the sunshine helps your crops grow, it poses a silent threat to your feed supply. Heat and humidity are the enemies of fresh livestock feed. Storing your grain properly during these months prevents spoilage, saves you money, and keeps your animals healthy.
Fight Moisture and Mold
Humidity rises quickly in Iowa springs and summers. Moisture leads to mold growth, which produces toxins that can harm your livestock. Always store feed in a dry, well-ventilated area. Never place bags directly on concrete floors, as they draw up moisture “wicking” from the ground. Use wooden pallets to keep bags elevated. This simple step allows air to circulate underneath and keeps your feed dry. If you use bulk bins, check them regularly for leaks and clean out old feed completely before refilling to prevent hot spots.
Keep Pests Out
Warm weather brings out insects and rodents looking for a free meal. These pests not only eat your profits but also contaminate the feed with waste and disease. Store bagged feed in galvanized metal trash cans or heavy-duty plastic bins with tight-fitting lids. Clean up any spills immediately. Loose grain on the floor is an open invitation for mice and bugs to move into your barn and multiply.
Manage Your Inventory
Feed degrades faster in the heat. Vitamins break down, and fats can go rancid. During winter, you might stock up for months, but in summer, you should buy smaller quantities more frequently. Aim to use feed within two to four weeks of purchase. Practice the “First In, First Out” method. Always use your oldest bags first so nothing sits too long in the stifling heat.
